It was Kevin M. Brozek’s dream to create a community center in the eastern district of Indiana Township on this very site. His dream has been realized by the dedication of the Rural Ridge School/Kevin M. Brozek Community Center on June 9, 2007. Kevin M. Brozek was elected to the position of Indiana Township Supervisor - Rural Ridge District, and later became Manager of the Township. He died in July of 2002.
When a developer bought the property surrounding the Rural Ridge School and the school building itself in order to develop the Rural Ridge Estates, Kevin Brozek negotiated with developers to donate back the school
building and adjacent property surrounding it. The completely refurbished building and surrounding grounds, parking lot and playground areas was accomplished with the help of many volunteers and several grants. Through the help of a number of grants from the Allegheny County Department of Community and Economic Development, an investment from the Township, as well as private donations, the property was completely refurbished.
Community Development Block Grant funding through the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for the Rural Ridge School House/Kevin M. Brozek Community Center provided funds along with donations that helped with:
- Replacement of playground equipment, upgrade existing asphalt walking trail.
- Install 3 Gas heat units, replace entire electrical system, install drop ceiling and trim, and install 2 public restrooms.
- Install Concession Area, patio area, and unisex bathroom.
- Install all new windows, entryway doors, new soffit/fascia/gutters/downspouts, carpeting, and baseboards.
- Renovate kitchen, vending, and office areas, install a gymnasium/recreation room, 30 ft. flag pole, and install a water fountain.
- Replace the existing roof, add parking area with lighting, and construct a walkway to the entrance of the facility.
Kevin would be proud.
